John Carpenter won an Academy Award for his 1970 short subject The Resurrection Of Bronco Billy which he co-wrote while attending the University of Southern California. His USC short, Dark Star was expanded to feature length and became a cult hit in 1974.

But it was Halloween in 1978 that changed the face of the modern horror film, earning him the indelible stamp of “Master of Horror”. His distinctive visual and musical style is evident in such classics as The Fog (1979), Escape From New York (1981), The Thing (1982), and the Lovecraft inspired In the Mouth Of Madness (1995).
